The length of the hydrocarbon chains affects Essay Example for Free

The length of the hydrocarbon chains affects Essay The aim of this experiment is to find out whether the length of the hydrocarbon chains affects how runny the oil is. Preliminary work needed: With the apparatus that is available in the school laboratory there are 2 different possible ways in which to carry out this experiment. From doing preliminary work testing both methods we hope to find out which one will give the most accurate reliable results. This will then be the experiment we carry out in the actual experiment itself. The two different methods we could use are as follows: 1. To simply take a slide, place it at an angle and drip oil down timing how long it takes to get to the bottom. 2. The other way would be to have a thin long tube filled with the oil, and timing how long it takes a small ball bearing to travel through each different oil. Preliminary results: From testing these two methods we immediately found that method 1 would be somewhat inaccurate. We found that each time we dropped oil onto the slide it took a different path every time. Therefore each different oil will be travelling a different distance. To gain any sort of accurate results the oil must travel the same distance each time. However, we found that we could make the oil go down in a straight line, but only if the slide was placed at a much greater angle. We initially tested this with the C12 oil, and with this it was fine. Then when we tried to ensure that the angle was ok for the C6 oil also we encountered problems. The oil fell down the slide so fast it was impossible to time. From the preliminary work we soon realised that method 2 would be far more accurate. From testing various different angles to place the tube at we found that 15i let the ball bearing roll through the oil at a manageable pace to be able to time it. We also found suitable start and finish marks for which the ball could pass through. Also using this method is far more practical, engine designers, for example, have to work out how long a liquid will take to pour down a tube. The diagram below shows how many different paths the oil could take going down a slide, with a tube the U shape at the bottom keeps the ball going in a straight line. This gives us far better results to take speeds of the ball from. Method: We are going to drop ball bearings into a small narrow but relatively long tube of oil, and time how long it takes for the ball to get past a given points: We will fill the tube up with oil, starting with C6 the going all the way through up to C16. ON each oil we will drop the ball bearing in from the top, start the timer when it goes passed the start mark and stop the timer when it goes past the finish mark. It is important that we ensure there is exactly 1. 5ml of oil in the tube and also the tube is placed at 15i. We plan to take 5 readings of each oil and then take an average of the results. Apparatus needed: 1. Clamp stand 2. Stop clock 3. Semi permanent marker pen (to mark start finish points) 4. 5 ball bearings 5. Protractor 6. Oils 7. Pipette 8. Safety goggles It is important to wear safety goggles throughout this experiment as we are dealing with oils. Maintaining a fair test: Two things need to be measured in this experiment and these are the amount of oil to use and the start and finish lines. From the preliminary work we found that 1. 5ml of the oil would sufficiently fill our tube up to a given point. When deciding where to mark the start and finish points we made sure that at the bottom of the tube was enough space for 5 ball bearings to lay. When marking the finish point we took this into consideration and marked the finish point accordingly, 1. 5cm up from the bottom of the tube. This was so that when we dropped each ball bearing in the same oil we wouldnt have to keep tipping all the oil out to get the ball bearing out each time. This would have made the experiment far more messy and time consuming. When marking the start point we made sure that for the runniest oil we had, the ball baring had enough distance to pick up a greater speed than what it would be travelling through the oil. Therefore for every oil we had, the ball would immediately hit the oil and slow down. The distance this gave us from start to finish was 10cm. There will only be one controlled variable in this experiment and that is the chain length of the oils we use. For accurate results we will be using 5 different oils, these are: C6, C8, C10, C12, and C16. We are unable to use a C14 oil but hopefully the graphs plotted from the results will allow us to see what result we would have gained from a C14 oil. Everything else in the experiment will be kept a constant. That is the angle of the tube, the ball bearings, and the same person stopping and starting the clock. To ensure that our results are even more accurate and reliable we will run the test through once before we actually start to take any results. This is because when the ball bearings have been in the oil once it is extremely difficult to remove all the particles of oil, there will always be an oily residue left on the ball. So the only way to solve this would be to ensure that before taking any results the ball already has this thin layer of oil over it for every different test on each of the oils. In addition to this it is important that the ball is placed into the tube right at the top and left to roll down pushing the ball down into the tube will provide inaccurate results. Prediction: I predict that as the chain length of an oil increases, the runniness of the oil will decrease, (the ball bearing will take longer to travel through the oil). If you compare a hexane molecule (C8 H12) to an octane molecule (C8H18) it is clear that the octane molecule has more carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms: The difference between them is to do with the overall size of the molecule.

Philosophy - Aristotle’s Concept of Virtue and the Comic Strip of Calv

Aristotle’s Concept of Virtue and the Comic Strip of Calvin and Hobbes One of the many questions with which Aristotle is concerned in the Nicomachean Ethics is: What is virtue and who is the virtuous man? However, this question of virtue is not considered in a vacuum. Aristotle’s discussion, far from amounting to mere ethereal musings, is firmly grounded in the everyday of life and consideration. So, in discussing the ideas of Aristotle, it is appropriate, and even necessary, that we ground our discussion in a like manner. That is, we should turn to a concrete example in order to help clarify Aristotle’s discussion of virtue in the Ethics. Thus we are presented with our first dilemma: who to choose as this "concrete example" of which we have spoken. In order to determine this, we should first determine to whom it is that Aristotle addresses himself and his discussion, as it will obviously do us no good to attempt to apply the ideas which Aristotle sets forth to a personage whom he discounts or, at least, to whom he merely does not address himself. In general, it is fair to say that Aristotle attempts to address the bulk of mankind. In doing so, Aristotle assumes some very basic morality as a grounds for the proceeding discussion, and those who expect the discussion to be applicable to their own lives must have done the same. That is, "to be a competent student of what is right and just, and of politics generally, one must first have received a proper upbringing in moral conduct" (Arist. 1.4.5).1 In addition, integral to the discussion is the geography of the soul which Aristotle provides, and thus it would be helpf ul in our concrete example if it were also to provide a somewhat tangible expression of this juxtaposi... ...ng good when one has an innate inclination towards evil. Closeup on Calvin as he packs snow in his hands, forming a snowball. Calvin: I think one good act by me, even if it’s just to get presents, should count as five good acts by some sweet tempered kid motivated by the pureness of his heart. Don’t you? Susie Durkins (Calvin’s archenemy) enters the frame. Calvin’s arm is cocked with the snowball in hand. Hobbes is barely visible in the frame, but it is important to note he has reverted to his stuffed-animal state. Calvin: Hey Susie! The snowball hits Susie in the back of the head with a "POW!" knocking her to the ground. Calvin and Hobbes (now in his live-animal state) sprint across the snow in flight. Hobbes: Of course, in your case the question is academic. Calvin: I wanted to put a rock in the snowball, but I didn’t! That should be worth a lot!

Death of a Salesman Tragic Hero

Willy as Tragic Hero in Death Of A Salesman Willy Loman is indeed a pathetic and tragic hero of Death of a Salesman. His problems stem from his own delusions, the American Dream turning sour, and misunderstanding his job and family. All of this tells the story of everyday people in American society. His environment is changing faster than his beliefs which is why he is in the dilemma that he is in now. His own delusions are a result of his failure to succeed in life. He still believes he is popular, respected and good looking. But at age 63, he is none of these. Nobody liked him that much since very few people came to his funeral. His delusion was that there would be people across the country coming to the funeral. However, in those moments that he begins to realize the truth, his wife Linda while understanding his situation, supports his delusion. She say to him that â€Å"you're the best looking man in the world†. But the truth is that being popular and good looking is not ho w you would succeed in the world now. It would be through hard work and perseverance. The American Dream has long turned sour for him. At the beginning of his life, he remembers traveling in a wagon going westward. His parents conquered the new frontier and succeeded. His brother Ben went â€Å"into the jungle at 17 and came out rich at age 21†. For a while, the American Dream was alive in Willy too. He helped stake out new territory by selling his goods, his son Biff was going to go to university with a scholarship and he had a home with no apartments closing on him. But now, he was forced to work on commission at an old age and was fired later by his godson. His favored son Biff had wandered about the country doing odd jobs for many years, his friend's son Charlie was successful and his home was now surrounded by apartment buildings which blocked out the sunlight. He was not a success in selling , he failed to raise his sons and his beliefs were just delusions. Only through h ard work and perseverance would he achieve his goal of success but he decided to go along the lazy route and failed. Willy Loman misunderstood his family and job with profound reprucssions. He totally misunderstood his occupation by trying to sell himself than the products. He could not hope to succeed because there was virtually nothing to advance on him. People could buy into him because there was nothing to sell in the first place. Because of t his, he eventually lost his job.His family was something he equally misunderstood. His wife and two children did not let him know that they knew the truth about him. They would tell him t hat his beliefs were wrong and that they knew he was trying to kill himself. They did n ot always support him. As Biff was leaving the restaurant, he told Happy to take care of his father. Happy rejected him and he told the 2 girls he had picked up that Willy was not his father but was â€Å"just a guy†. Willy left the restaurant very humiliated. H is son Biff no longer had the same ideals as Willy or respected him much after his affair with Miss Francis. He had instilled the idea along with Linda that they had the ability to save him but they didn't. He later dies to escape the repercussions of the problems he has caused himself. The pathetic and tragic hero of Death of Salesman is Willy Loman. He had a bright future but later got lost along the way. This is the story of the â€Å"Low Man†. Many believe in ideals like Willy's, many have had the American Dream fail and many did not see that their family lost their way because of them. It is a tragedy that a man with so much potential lost everything by believing in the wrong things and never realizes his situation.

Profile of the Nazi Low Riders - NLR

The Nazi Low Riders (also known as the NLR) originated during the 1970s inside a California Youth Authority facility and is closely associated with the two gangs - Aryan Brotherhood (AB) and the Public Enemy Number One (PEN1). Founded by John Stinson, a white supremacist inmate, the gang was originally formed to act on behalf of the powerful Aryan Brotherhood. Alliances were made and the NLR acted as errand boys to the AB. In the 1980s, the authorities worked hard to break up the AB by isolating its known members in maximum lockup prisons like Pelican Bay and other Security Housing Units (SHUs) and the NLR was needed to conduct AB business in the medium security prisons. Up to this point, the NLR was viewed by prison officials more as a troublesome group rather than a gang. But with its strong alliance with the AB, which had proven to be the most powerful and ruthless prison gang, the NLR began to grow and prison officials took notice. Unlike the AB with its strict - whites only - policy, the NLR permitted some Hispanics to join. Money, not racial purity, seemed to be their ultimate goal. However, in 1999, the NLR was officially classified by CDC authorities as a prison gang causing its membership to also be housed in SHUs, thus diminishing the NLRs usefulness to the AB. Organizational Structure Unlike their AB mentors, the NLR has a simple structure which is adhered to more inside the prisons than on the streets. There is a three-tier system: Seniors: Requires five years of gang membership and at least three seniors must elect the candidate.Juniors: Act in the  capacity of foot soldiers and may recruit new members, but cannot induct new members into the gang.Kids: Are recruits generally coming from smaller gangs. Symbols - Tattoos SwastikasNLR - Nazi Low RidersSS - Lightning boltsHH - Heil Hitler88 - The numerical equal to HHWP - White PowerWSU - White Student UnionAYM - Aryan Youth Movement There are no strict rules about placement of NLR tattoos. In fact, many NLR members are hiding their tattoos in order to avoid being detected as a member and thus being sent to a maximum security prison. Others tell prison officials that the NLR tattoo stands for No Longer Racist. They have engaged in a variety of criminal activity including extortion, the production and distribution of illegal narcotics, assault, hate crimes, and murder. There are an estimated 1,000 members spread across California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Oklahoma, Illinois and Florida. Internal Struggles In recent years the gang has had some internal struggles over the race issue. One group wants to adopt the Aryan Brotherhood policy of pure white members only, while others want to remain with a half-white ancestry and no black ancestry policy for membership. The Nazi Low Riders Oath I, as a Nazi Low Rider, hereby swear an unrelenting oath upon the green graves of our sires, upon the children in the wombs of our wives, upon the throne of god almighty, sacred to his name, to join together in the holy union with the brothers in this circle and to declare forthright that from this day moment on that I have no fear of death, no fear of foe, that I have a sacred duty to do whatever is necessary to deliver our people from the Jew and bring total victory to the Nazi Low Riders.I, as a Nazi Low Rider Warrior, swear myself to complete secrecy to the Order and total loyalty to my comrades.Let me bear witness to you, my brothers, that should one of you fall in battle, I will see to the welfare and well-being of your family.Let me bear witness to you, my brothers, that should one of you be taken prisoner, I will do whatever is necessary to regain your freedom.Let me bear witness to you, my brothers, that should an enemy agent hurt you, I will chase him to the ends of the ear th and remove his head from his body. And furthermore, let me bear witness to you, my brothers, that if I break this oath let me be forever cursed upon the lips of our people as a coward and an oath breaker. My brothers, let us be his battle-ax and weapons of war. Let us go forward by ones and twos, by scores and legions and as true Nazi Low Riders with pure hearts and strong minds face the enemies of our brotherhood and families, with courage and determination. We hereby invoke the blood covenant and declare that we are in a full state of war and will not lay down our weapons until we have driven the enemy into the sea and reclaimed that which is rightfully ours. Through our blood and gods will, the land will be that of our children. UNTIL DEATH
